Founded by Tatsumi Sankyo, Tatsumi-ryu Heiho is a comprehensive martial art encompassing the sword, other weapons, unarmed combat, and strategy. Shinto Muso-ryu Jo

Originally founded by Muso Gonnosuke Katsuyoshi, Shinto Muso-ryu encompasses a comprehensive study of jojutsu (staff), kenjutsu (sword), tanjojutsu (cane), jittejutsu (truncheon) and hojojutsu (arresting cord), and was practiced in the Kuroda domain until first being popularised in Tokyo by Shimizu Takaji-sensei in the 1920s and 30s.

Paul Maloney-sensei started his study of Jo in Japan under the guidance of the late Shimizu-sensei and Donn Draeger-sensei in the 1960s and 70s. Returning to Australia, Shimazu Sensei and Draeger Sensei’s wish for the promotion of Shindo Muso Ryu Jodo has been carried out by the Australian Jodokai, the Australian branch of the International Jodo Federation, founded by Draeger Sensei and now lead by Phil Relnick Sensei. Yagyu Shingan-ryu Taijutsu

Yagyu Shingan-ryu Taijutsu, sometimes known as Yagyu Shingan-ryu Goto-ha, is a rugged bujutsu that includes taijutsu (unarmed combat), bojutsu (staff) and kenjutsu (sword). Paul Keen returned to Brisbane in 2006, after spending 10 years in Japan. He has received authorization to lead an official training circle (keikokai) in Australia. Yagyu Shingan-ryu Heihojutsu

Founded approximately 400 years ago, Yagyu Shingan Ryu Heiho includes centers on the practice of taijutsu (unarmed combat) and a variety of weapons and tactics. Tenjin Shinyo-ryu Jujutsu

Iso Mataemon studied and mastered Yoshin Ryu Jujutsu and Shinno Shindo Ryu Jujutsu(also based on the Yoshin Ryu style) before developing Tenjin Shinyo Ryu Jujutsu. Tenjin Shinyo Ryu Jujutsu is in turn based on the styles mentioned above, but what distinguished it from the other styles of Jujutsu of the day was the use of Atemi (strikes).

Most of the Jujutsu techniques in Tenjin Shinyo Ryu are accompanied by a strike. This is what made the style so effective. Note also that Jigoro Kano studied Tenjin Shinyo Ryu and Kito Ryu Jujutsu before developing Judo, so many of the Techniques particularly the Kime No Kate and Itsutsu no Kata are based on Tenjin Shinyo-Ryu.Morihei Ueshiba the founder of Aikido studied Tenjin and Daito Ryu Jujutsu styles. Although Daito Ryu is the basis of Aikido some techniques such as Kote Gaeshi are common to both styles.

Located in the North Sydney Police Citizens Youth Club, a branch of Kubota Sensei‘s Tenjin Shinyo Ryu Jujutsu has been active for quite a number of years under the direction of George Marton-sensei (Sydney, NSW). Tenjin Shinyo Ryu is an extensive system of over 130 kata of classical jujutsu unarmed combat teaching from seated positions, standing positions, weapons defence, and also includes special healing methods and resuscitation (kappo). Sosuishi-ryu Bujutsu

Located in semi-rural Engadine, the Australian branch of Sousuishi Ryu (a system stressing unarmed defence, sword, etc) is lead by senior practitioners and teachers Pat Harrington Sensei (Menkyo Kaiden) and Betty Huxley Sensei (Menkyo). Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido

At present, two groups which practice Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido are known to the author. The Kenshikan Dojo in Melbourne, Victoria, and the Budokan Academy in Canning Vale, Western Australia.

The Budokan Academy provides training in Seitei Gata Iaido, Muso Shinden Ryu, Jodo and the Jishukan system of martial arts (a modern Japanese martial art based on kenpo, jujutsu, judo, hayanawa and jojutsu). The principal of the academy, Ramon Lawrence-Sensei together with Bob Shersby Sensei lead instruction in Muso Shinden Ryu together in WA. The Kenshikan Dojo is located in Melbourne, Australia. The dojo is owned by the members of the Melbourne Kendo Club, with patronage and assistance from the Otsuka family of Tokyo (with support from the family to promote cultural exchange of Japanese sword arts, related to kendo).

Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu

Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaijutsu

The practice of Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu (founded by Hayashizaki Jinsuke Minamoto Shigenobu), which centres on “iaijutsu” (perhaps suitably described as drawing and cutting with the Japanese sword) is conducted by several groups throughout Australia.

Glenn Stockwell-sensei (Gold Coast, QLD), a 7th dan practitioner trained by Yasuyoshi Kimura-Sensei of Osaka’s Meishinkan, is the chief instructor of the Meishinkan organisation in Australia with branches in Queensland (Gold Coast, Brisbane) and New South Wales.
